As many of you know, His Eminence, Archbishop Stephen, Primate of the Italo-Greek Orthodox Catholic Church went into the hospital on November 4th for colon resection surgery. The initial surgery went well and His Eminence was scheduled to remain in the hospital for about five days recovery. On Tuesday. November 8th the situation dramatically and critically changed. At approximately 11:00pm on Tuesday evening, November. 8th, His Eminence coded due to a blood clot that traveled to his lungs. While they were able to bring him back, family members were told that his condition was grave and that he might not make it. In the process of trying to stabilize his vital signs for emergency surgery, His Eminence coded a second time. He was transferred from St. Luke's Memorial Hospital ICU to St Elizabeth's Hospital for emergency surgery to remove the blood clot from his lungs. He underwent the surgery and thankfully the surgeons were able to remove the blood clot, which was 6" long. His Eminence remained in CTICU at St. Elizabeth's until 11/15, at which time he was released to go home. However, within 15 minutes of being home, another blood clot had entered His Eminence's lungs and he was rushed back to the hospital. Because they could not do another surgery, His Eminence was put into an induced coma, in which he remained for three days while they "blasted" the blood clot with medication. His condition remained critical for several days. He Eminence remained in intensive care for approximately another week. He was finally released from the hospital on Monday,
On Monday, December 12th, His Eminence was readmitted to St. Luke's Hospital with a fever. He remained in the hospital because of an abdominal abcess until Friday, December 23, 2016, at which time he was released to go home.
It is for these reasons that there have been no posts to the Church's blogs.
We ask that you keep His Eminence in your prayers, that God will grant him a speedy recovery and return to ministry.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
